Hands-on review: ZVEX Effects Fuzz Probe

Purchased one for the bridge position of my Fender Standard Strat. I liked it so well I bought another one for the neck position. This pickup is sold exclusively through Guitar Center. Purchased at Guitar Center during a sales event. The price was $29 for each.

This pickup has much more warmth and output than the stock single-coil pickups. I wanted a "fatter" bridge sound for blues and a warmer, mellow jazz tone for the neck position. This pickup does both. The bridge position gives much more output without being harsh. With tone adjustment this pickup can do more than just give the twang of the original. The same pickup in the neck position gives me great jazz tones. Both of these pickups are crystal clean. None of the muddiness I have heard on many other humbuckers. I left the middle position stock single-coil for the "pure" sound. I find the mixed switch positions (2, 4) give much different sounds than the origianls. Now there really are 5 different sounds in the 5-way switch! This is the Korean version of the Hot Rails for Strat pickup. Duncan email acknowledged the Hot Rails design heritage. They said it was even hotter that the Hot Rails!That explains the lower price, and the beautiful sound. This unit is a direct replacement for a strat single coil - same fit. Easy replacement.

The form factor is the same as the single-coil, but the humbucker has no cover on the sides. The tape cover can fit a little snug and need "help" as you adjust the unit through the pickguard. This unit is only available at GC and was not list on the Duncan Web pages. I had to email to get any details.

The design is one of the most popular Seymour Duncan. It is constructed in Korea under strict quality control. It looks and performs beautifully. The results: A great pickup at 1/3 of the cost of the US version.
